October 2014

01/10/2014 19:01:58

Jason has returned from his big Greek Island adventure - looking tanned and relaxed, as you would expect. Who could believe the end of the year is approaching so quickly?! Keep in mind that any orders you might want before Christmas will take 4-5 weeks to create, so get your skates on soon!

Jason's Thought Corner: Modern Relationships

Jason Withers

Meeting, greeting, befriending and being involved in an important step in people lives, I really get a snapshot of the joy and development of people's relationships. It is really a great grounding for life, working in a luxury goods/art & design/investment area, and it brings me a lot of happiness as it is tied to people. If being a small part of these people's lives also brings them joy, it makes me happy also, this has been a part of human culture from the beginning.

Jason's Thought Corner (1)

Many people and couples I see dozens of times. This may sound strange but after engagement rings comes wedding and eternity rings then for many other items such as anniversary rings, earrings pendants, anklets, bracelets, birthdays, Christmases and the remodelling of old jewellery. Not to mention the many cleaning and polishing visits of the pieces in between the creation of new items.

As part of this constant meeting with people over the years, I see that everybody really just wants to improve and add to the quality of their relationships: happy life, happy wife.

White Gold

White gold is a very popular choice for jewellery. Jason Withers 18K White Gold is alloyed with Palladium, which unlike nickel and zinc (still used by most retailers) is a very rare, precious metal in the Platinum family that does not tarnish or discolour. This ensures a longer life and a whiter, brighter finish.

Our White Gold is finished with a final plating of Rhodium, one of the rarest metals on Earth. This enhances the shiny, bright white finish that attracts so many people to White Gold. When buying a wedding band and engagement ring set, it is imperative that both rings be made of the same metal. If one is Platinum and the other White Gold, the Platinum will rapidly deteriorate the White Gold because of their different densities and durability.

Yellow Gold

Gold is graded not by weight, but by purity called Karats. Pure Gold is 24K, but is too soft for use in jewellery. The best purity of gold for jewellery is 18K, or 75% pure gold and 25% alloy. This is what we always use at Jason Withers Original Diamonds, as it ensures excellent wearability and a fabulous colour.

Rose Gold

Rose gold is yellow gold alloyed with copper to create a pretty, pinkish hue. It's great for antique style rings, or to enhance coloured fancy diamonds or other reddish or pink gemstones.

Platinum

Platinum is a silvery-white, precious metal which when alloyed to correct standards is more expensive than gold, due to its rarity and manufacturing difficulties. Unlike the best gold, which with constant wear has a lifespan of about fifty years; platinum is much harder and more durable and lasts for three lifetimes. Jason Withers only uses the best, with 95% platinum and 5% Ruthenium alloy, a precious metal in the same family. Platinum of this grade is stamped with "PLAT" or "950".

Rare $577,000 pink argyle and white diamond ring stolen from Sydney auction house

Scene ... the ring was on display at Theodore Bruce Auctions in Alexandria

A rare diamond ring worth $577,000 has been stolen from a Sydney auction house. The pink Argyle and white diamond ring was snatched from a display counter at Theodore Bruce Auctions and Valuers in Alexandria between 12.30pm and 1.25pm on Saturday, NSW Police said. An attendant at the auction discovered the ring was missing and called the police. About 100 people were inside the Ralph Street centre when the ring was stolen, police said. Each of the diamonds in the ring is laser-inscribed with a serial number. Police said they have not been able to acquire CCTV footage of the robbery.

About 90 per cent of the world’s pink Argyle diamonds are sourced from the Argyle Diamond Mine in the East Kimberly region in Western Australia.

In October 2013, a 2.51carat fancy deep pink gem from the mine sold for more than $2 million — a record price for an Argyle diamond.

Debbie's pick of the month

Black diamonds are becoming very popular at the moment, and this design perfectly highlights the striking contrast between the deep, natural black and the surrounding white diamonds. I adore the split band and the talon style claws on the centre stone!

This is a really unusual piece that Jason calls "an inspirational design". An interesting way of incorporating different colours into a ring and a great way to dress up a pink diamond. It would be perfect as a dress ring or fancy engagement ring.

Petra Diamonds unearths 232-carat white diamond worth more than $22m from South African mine

A 232-CARAT white diamond worth as much as $US20 million ($22 million) has been discovered at a South African mine famed for its big-gem finds.

The owner of Petra Diamonds said the jewel was found at Cullinan, east of Pretoria, which has supplied stones for Britain’s crown jewels and where the world’s largest diamond was unearthed more than a century ago.

"The stone is ... of exceptional size and clarity, and is a magnificent example of the large, high quality diamonds for which the mine is known," Petra Diamonds said in a statement.

In 1905, the world’s biggest diamond — the 3106-carat "Cullinan" — was discovered there, and later cut into two pieces to be included in the British crown jewels.

That’s a rock! ... Petra Diamonds have unearthed a 232-carat white diamond worth more than $20 million.

The last white diamond sold by the company was a 507.3 carat, which went for $US35.3 million in 2010, the highest price ever paid for a rough diamond, spokeswoman Cathy Malins said. Malins also said analysts had forecast that the newly found “rare and unique” gem, which will be auctioned before the end of this year, could sell for anything between $US10 million and $US20 million dollars.

The London-listed company operates six diamond mines on the continent — five in South Africa and one in Tanzania.

In addition to its history of yielding diamonds bigger than 10 carats, Cullinan is also a source of blue diamonds — some of the rarest jewels in nature.

In June, a 122.52-carat blue diamond was unearthed at the same South African mine.
